Introduction

WinPXE is a pure software solution of realizing the diskless environment in the computer classroom. WinPXE is an embedded Linux server running PXE and iSCSI services that enable client computers to boot up Microsoft windows from network without hard drives installed. PXE is a standard network boot protocol widely building in almost all the personal computers, namely, to setup a diskless computer is very easy by just turning on the LAN boot function in the BIOS.

The client computers have their own operating environment. It's very different from terminal service solution, because WinPXE solution is a hard drive replacement, the operating system runs at local machine, namely, each client computer can work properly without any disturbance by abusing or heavy-loading application, releasing from the terminal-service nightmare.

Any document is modified by users on the client computers will disappear after the rebooting, because WinPXE diskless system supports recovery mechanism to rollback to default setting at boot instantly, preventing from the virus injection and user abusing. However, once the client computer is assigned to be a super workstation, all the software installation procedures still work great as usual. Only install once on one of the client computers and the others will become newly installation after reboot. It certainly saves users lots of time on management and administration.

Successful Cases

Yu-Da Educational CenterGo

In 2004, WinPXE application had successfully been used in Yu-Da Educational Center- the top one cram school in Taiwan. It is the multimedia environment equipped with sixty diskless client computers and two Pentium IV computer servers. These Thinexpress diskless clients are connected via Ethernet to two Intel Pentium IV servers to approach a centralized desktop management.

Solution

Library

The library's unique public access situation demands a computing solution that provides complete control, security, and easy administration. Mounting software incompatibilities and associated downtime with its existing PCs led the library's network administrator to investigate a server-based computing alternative. The benefits of a server-based computing environment with WinPXE are numerous such as easily eliminates a great deal of complexity and points of failure and tighten control and security of our network resources.

Call Center

WinPXE is a centrally managed software successfully increases the manageability and reliability of each client computer. It not only easily handles numbers of calls also lower support costs and increase profitability and productivity.

Hospitality

WinPXE provides greater security, enhanced manageability, and improved reliability for hospitality. Because WinPXE appliance has no hard drives, all data is saved on the server so information cannot be stolen or lost. Unwanted applications cannot be saved on the device. WinPXE also highly reduces virus risks

Audio and Visual Center

WinPXE resolves network access problems by providing fast and efficient access to resources from virtually any location. It fully supports video and audio applications and that is what Thin Client is hardly to approach so far. For Thin Client, servers is the only one do data processing and that make server overloading problems become the main concern. With WinPXE, all the data are processed by client computers that reduce much more central loading problems. The solution is that it the highly performances great quality of audio and visual to users.

Internet Cafe

WinPXE appliance makes Internet Cafe manager saves up lots of time of managing each client computer. WinPXE is designed to assist in the day-to-day management of Internet cafes where time money calculation is involved. It also prevent your customers to install or delete anything on client systems. In this case, WinPXE diskless system not only provides you high security and simple management also low computer device costs.

Hotel

WinPXE diskless system certainly offers the hospitality market high performance, secure, flexible and reliable solutions. We understand business travelers would prefer to choose one provides high speed Internet hotel instead over those without Internet access. Besides, hotel personnel don't have to worry about becoming information technology technicians as well. The Extreme solution is easy to manage and provision, lowering the total cost of ownership

Department Store

WinPXE is designed to improve the performance and efficiency of in-store systems - more localized and flexible retail decisions through its unique diskless system architecture means faster, better and more flexible customer-facing services. WinPXE is absolutely great for inventory management and any service point such as check-out lane and customer service.

Airport

WinPXE appliance is efficient for computer check-in system at airports. It simply makes travel fast and easy. Its secure and centralized management device is good to lower IT cost and increase customer personal security. IT staff is able to efficiently manage WinPXE appliances, avoiding to go to remote airport locations to install software or provide technical support to users.

WinPXE diskless system Q & A

Q1: Only two client computers can run?
A: It means the keypro doesn't match the server edition. It needs to be changed. It should be ok when change the new keypro.

Q2: Client computers can't connect to server?
Q: How come server setup is ok but client computers still can't boot up?
A: 1. If it's the first time setup, remember to go to Option and Service Setting then restart the computer.
     2. Check if the two client computers setup are ok.
     3. Check if the Internet setup is ok.

Q3: Having the Internet problems when start the server?
Q: Why does it stop at “Brining Network up” when start the server?
A: Server will automatically look for DHCP for about a minute when setting the NAT.

Q4: Why did keypro checking fail?
Q: Why did it show "KeyPro fail "when choosing WinPXE under WinPXE graphic interface?
A: 1.Check if it's the correct edition
2.Check if power of the printer is on
3.Check if there's any hardware conflict
     4.Check if port is connected

Q5: How can WinPXE do the image copy (for 98 or xp)?
Q: How can WinPXE do the image copy?
A: 1. Create an Image File from DiskMan which is under WinPXE interface.

Next, enter DiskName (ex.xpi) then you're done.
     2. Choose Option→Image Copy→Select from System HD list→Chose Saving Path

         →\mnt\nxp\disk\xpi\save file as Disk\-->press Save-->Copy

Q6: Figure out how to get in graphics interface
A: Still can't get in Graphic User Interface (GUI) after finish setting X-Window setup

and shows up fatal I/O error 104 (connection tested by peer) on X server 127.0.0.1:1.0

after 0 require? Showing the black screen? It means that you didn’t set up VGA card server correctly.

It should be fine after resetting.

WinPXE client management, installment and setup.

Q1: Keep restarting computer?
Q: Why does a server keep restarting when connecting to client computers after finish setting the server?

      What did I do wrong?
A: Because the client program setting failed. Please install client with two new programs.

Q2: Can't install client program
Q: Why can't I install client program with XP system?
A: Please remember to setup Network Neighborhood and give it a TCP/IP.

Q3: Virtual RAM question?
Q: How to setup Page File under XP?
A: Run Regedit → HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\nxdinit\PageFile
